About Txingudi Wetlands

Txingudi Wetlands, situated at the estuary of the Bidasoa River where it meets the Bay of Biscay, form an internationally important wetland complex bridging the Basque Country in Spain and the French Basque region. The wetland habitat features tidal marshes, salt flats, and reed beds shaped by coastal and riverine influences, creating a mosaic of ecosystems. This area is especially significant as a stopover and wintering ground for numerous migratory bird species, including waders, ducks, and other waterfowl. The Txingudi Wetlands are recognized under the Ramsar Convention as Wetlands of International Importance, reflecting its ecological value. Historically, the region has been traditionally used for fishing, salt extraction, and rice cultivation, with conservation efforts intensifying in recent decades to protect its biodiversity and water quality. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Txingudi for birdwatching from observation hides, walking along short nature trails, and enjoying panoramic coastal views. The wetlands' proximity to the town of Hondarribia, combined with well-maintained paths and interpretive information, makes it accessible for casual visitors and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Landmarks include the salt marshes with their unique flora and a series of bird observatories that offer views of species such as black-winged stilts, flamingos, and various herons. The area’s blend of cultural and natural heritage, combined with moderate coastal climate, provides a tranquil yet dynamic experience for visitors seeking to connect with nature in a unique transboundary wetland setting.
